One of the most popular brands is Canon. These cameras are generally pretty good except for a few serious traps. Below we will list them and show you some photos of what we mean. If you do not see your model here, check back often. We are updating as fast as we can.
MODEL 518--This is a great point-and-shoot camera except for one thing. They have one battery in the handle and the handle is open into the body of the camera. If the battery was not removed before storing, the outgassing from the coroding battery will eat the inside of the camera. Look at the pictures to see the damage this causes. When they are this bad they are generally not worth repairing.
THE AUTOZOOMS--814 AND 1014
Terrific cameras IF you get them serviced. The rubber used in the maunal exposure control wheel turns to jelly due to age. The rest of the camera is usually SUPERB. The lenses are second to none. SO LET US FIX 'EM. We have developed a replacement part to fix the manual exposure control that takes care of the problem. There are a lot of these around not being used because of this one problem. Check out the photo to see this. Go back to the SERVICES page to see the discussion on the Precision Light Meter Power Supply. It makes these cameras deadly accurate on exposure.
Leaving the batteries in the top of the camera will make a mess but it is generally repairable. Examine it closely. If it has gone on too long the optics will be coated or destroyed. Look at the photo closely so you will know what to look for.Having said all of the above, the 518 has a terrific lens and is one of the best point and shoot cameras out there, if you get a good one
THE XLS CAMERAS--814 AND 1014
Easily the most popular Super 8 camera in existience today. They are very difficult to service so they are more expensive to maintain. They take fabulous pictures and are "PRO" quality but lubricating them properly is a major undertaking. Do not let the beautiful look fool you. Listen to them run very closely. When they start to dry out they will labor and even develop a high pitched squeal while running. They can be fixed but expect a $200.00 and up tab. Our guy that works on them is the best there is, bar none! You get what you pay for.
